Palais du Cinéma (Former American Center)--page 2 (of two pages)

Frank Gehry
1994
Place Leonard Bernstein, 12th Arrondissement; 51, Rue de Bercy

The eastern facade with scarce fenestration

The north facade

Here, Gehry responds to the urban context with the kind of repeated fenestration characteristic of nineteenth century Parisian buildings. The post-modern play is seen in the deeply recessed windows, the apparent canted wall (as if this were a masonry building), and the stone-defying overhang at the base. See the Monadnock Building for an example of a real masonry building with a wider base.
