Château de Chambord--page 3 (of 4 pages)

Domenico da Cortona?
1519-1550

The spectacular roof

The roof has not only terraces with expansive views, but also animation "in the most fantastic fashion by pinnacles, dormer windows, chimney stacks--a forest of small pavilions in which the exuberance of the ornamental motifs is further stressed by polychromy of the inlaid stones" (Zerner 64). It is generally noted that many of the details are Italian in origin--inlaid panels and shell motifs, for example.
