Academy of Medicine

Philip Shutze
1940

The Academy of Medicine, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, illustrates the continuing relevance and beauty of the Neo-classical style in public buildings, well into the twentieth century. It uses the severest form of columns and pilasters (Tuscan without fluting), a central pedimented portico, and coffered lunette windows in the square tower. Its exterior surface is stucco and compass-headed, recessed windows punctuate all the facades. In the interior the rotunda displays a Czechoslovakian chandelier used in the movie, "Gone with the Wind." A nonprofit foundation, Atlanta Medical Heritage, owns the building and has converted it for public use.
