Constantine, Capitoline Museum

bronze; colossal scale





Like the colossal marble head of Constantine, this colossal bronze head is what remains of a larger statue (see the hand below). Like the marble head, it is both a portrait with some recognizable realistic traits as well as an abstract portrait of imperial power. The over-large staring eyes may suggest an inner power or spirituality as well.

This left hand is generally believed to belong with the colossal head..
