Baroque Period
(17th century)

Index

Art historians and musicologists often use the period designation "baroque" to refer to the art and music of the 17th century. The term "baroque" can also be used as a more specific stylistic definition. And to add to the confusion, when "baroque" means a kind of style, then not all of the art of the 17th century can be called baroque in style. But don't worry. When we use the term as a stylistic definition we will define it more carefully. For the time being, baroque only means 17th century art and architecture.
