Below are my daily plans for class during the Fall 2002 term, along with links to web sites and journal entries by students in the course. Correspondence between these plans and what actually occurred in class on that day is never perfect and sometimes quite inexact. In particular, these notes usually contain more than we actually managed to cover in class. Web sites and links included here generally relate fairly closely to the subjects described for each day.

Spring 2002

Below are my daily plans for class during the Spring 2002 term, along with links to web sites students discovered. Correspondence between these plans and what actually occurred in class on that day is never perfect and sometimes quite inexact. In particular, these notes usually contain more than we actually managed to cover in class. Web sites and links included here generally relate fairly closely to the subjects described for each day.

Note: As of Aug. 22, 2002, most student journals from Spring 2002 have been removed from these pages. Students in the Fall 2002 course should note that the structure of the course will be similar, but not identical.

Day 2 On Juhnke/Hunter chapter 2: The Original Peacemakers: Native Americans.

Day 3 On Juhnke/Hunter chapters 3 and 4: The Revolutionary War and republican peace experiments.

Day 4 On Juhnke/Hunter chapter 5: the antislavery movement. Also materials on ways to fight terrorism, and on the Enron scandal.

Day 5 On Juhnke/Hunter chapters 6 and 7: the Civil War and Reconstruction. Includes "alternate history" links.

Day 6 On Juhnke/Hunter chapter 8: industrialism and workers' movements.

Day 7  On Juhnke/Hunter chapters 9 and 10: progressivism, pragmatism and the two world wars.

Day 8  On Juhnke/Hunter chapters 11 and 12: the civil rights movement and the Cold War.

Day 9  On Platoon and the Vietnam War.

Day 10  On Juhnke/Hunter chapter 13 and epilogue: environmental issues and history and hope. With some notes on social/political conditions of the last thirty years.

Day 11 On Roger & Me and labor/management history and issues, including NAFTA and the use of plant closing as a threat to prevent union organizing.

Day 12 On Color Purple, with some notes about the midterm exam. Includes links on domestic violence, incest, and lots of Alice Walker material.

Day 13 Color Purple, continued. Includes some quotes by Walker on religion in the book.

Day 14 Color Purple, continued. Includes material on Africa, missionary movements, women's issues in Africa, African-American Women's Network.

Day 15 Color Purple, concluded. With a few notes about the exam, and some useful sites on Color Purple and Alice Walker.

Day 16 War Memorials, part 1. With web sites on Dresden, trench warfare, and various fascinating topics.

Day 17 War Memorials, part 2.

Day 18 On War Memorials, neo-Nazi web sites, etc.

Day 19 Honky, part 1.

Day 20 Do the Right Thing discussion.

Day 21 Honky, part 2. With brief emails from Dalton Conley himself!

NOTE: Day 22 was spent organizing materials for the last three days of discussions. Days 23 and 24 were poster sessions.
