Some Christian Resources on the Web

Any page of Christian links should begin with the home page of the Institute for Christian Leadership, which has one of the most comprehensive sets of Christian links I've ever seen.

Bible resources

• For those who are seeking general familiarity with the Christian Scriptures, the Bible Tutor is available from Luther Seminary. This resource is intended for those who already have some exposure to stories from the Bible; I'm not sure whether it would be useful to someone with no Judaeo-Christian background at all.

• The World Wide Web Bible Gateway is probably the best online Bible server, but doesn't contain the deuterocanonical books.

• The World Wide Study Bible and The Bible Browser contain both the canonical and deuterocanonical books. The Bible Browser is searchable.

• The Noncanonical Home Page, where editions of many apocryphal scriptures are kept as well as writings of the Church Fathers.

• The Douay Version of the Bible, formerly the most important edition for Roman Catholics but since superseded by other versions.

• The Online Bible, available for PC and Mac. This is no longer freeware. It includes the deuterocanonical books.

Christian thought

• While shameless self-promotion is unbecoming, I have mounted a few essays. They are largely related to the general topic of science-and-religion.

• Martin Luther's Small Catechism is an exposition of the essentials of the Christian Faith.

• Online libraries:
  • The Christian Classics Ethereal Library

  • The Christia Library is a central site for many thoughtful essays which have been written for CHRISTIA-L. One which I rather like is James Kiefer's on the various meanings of "faith".

• Some thoughtful sites:

  First Things

  First Things is a magazine with a decidedly conservative bent. It is published by The Institute on Religion and Public Life, an "interreligious" organization. In practice, its articles are by (in order of frequency) Roman Catholics, Jews and Lutherans, though there has been a recent appeal for submissions from those of other religious persuasions. The editor is Roman Catholic.

  Ravi Zecharias International Ministries

  Ravi Zecharias is a Christian of Indian (that's the subcontinent) birth, whose ministry is the defense of Truth as an absolute as the first step in Christian apologetics. The website has links to essays and excerpts from his books. I find Zecharias' work both interesting and necessary -- as CS Lewis wrote, these days we first need to convert people to good old-fashioned paganism before we can convert them to Christianity.

  The Christian Think Tank

  This site is largely the creation (and thought) of one individual, but a lot of it is worth reading. He also includes a theological and philisophical humor page which isn't too bad.

• The Society of Christian Philosophers is intended to provide fellowship for philosophers who are also Christians. The home page is not terribly useful until you scroll down and find the link to their index page, where you will find all sorts of interesting things.

Resources for putting the Gospel into action

• Habitat for Humanity, one of the most useful Christian ministries in the world. Here is the central web page for campus chapters.

• Although Amnesty International does not consider itself a Christian ministry, it most certainly does the work of God in the world. Here is Amnesty International USA. One concrete action that I take as a member of Amnesty is to participate in the Freedom Writers Network.

• Sojourners Online is the online version of the magazine whose goal is to promote social activism and show that "Christian" and "right-wing" are not synonymous.

• I was raised Roman Catholic, and still have a soft spot; here's the (Roman) Catholic Information Center on Internet.

• The Orthodox Church in America is an indigenous American Christian Church which was formed in response to the Gospel given by Russian missionaries to the Inuit and Aleut peoples in Alaska.
