Energy was not a well-defined scientific concept before 1800; most chemists considered heat to be a chemical element! We now know that heat is energy; it is the most basic form of energy, to which all useful energy is ultimately degraded.

Heat is a fascinating and slippery thing, and the topic of its own branch of physics and chemistry: thermodynamics. Thermodynamics studies how heat, and other forms of energy, are transferred from one body to another.
